Facilities

The WCCMS is part of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES), located in the Peter O’Donnell building (POB) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, located in the Biomedical Engineering Building. The WCCMS is divided into two labs: the Computational Lab, located in the Peter O’Donnell Building (POB), and a wet lab, located in the Engineering Education and Research (EER) building. Both buildings are located directly on the University of Texas at Austin main campus and are within a 5-minute walk from each other.

POB COMPUTATIONAL LAB

The POB lab features three large offices and a large lab with 6 state-of-the-art 12 core MAC PRO desktop computers, two 12 Core with 128 GB RAM and one 28 core/256 GB RAM Dell Workstations, printers and copiers. In addition, there is a 3-desk work area equipped with three PCs with major software packages including ABAQUS, GEOMAGIC, Rhino3D, SIMPLEWARE for 3D model development. Each one of these machines features an 8 core (16 hyperthreaded) Intel Xeon E5 CPU with 96 GB of RAM. As a core member of ICES, members of WCCMS have streamlined access to the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). The CEL is housed in the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, which contains mini-clusters, computational visualization facilities, and extensive network access for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. A large machine room houses large computer systems, servers, and large-scale storage devices. ICES resides in the POB building which has a 196-seat auditorium with Ethernet ports at each seat. The auditorium also furnishes wireless networking, video conferencing and remote learning capabilities. There are eighteen networked seminar rooms with high-resolution audiovisual systems, some with video conferencing and video taping facilities.

EER WET LAB

The EER lab is a wet laboratory that houses extensive devices for mechanical and structural evaluation of biological tissues and biomaterials. Adjacent to this lab is an additional lab space used for organ/tissue processing and cell culture, which is approximately 250ft2. The lab is equipped with standard cell and tissue culture supplies and equipment. In short, the EER lab contains two laminar flow hoods, two incubators, and a Millipore water sterilization system.
